Child Development Program
Ministry Director: Karina Smith
Mission Statement:
To promote holistic development by practically demonstrating the unconditional love of God to vulnerable children.
Prior to the inception of this program, a child sponsorship project was in place to provide school fees and meet other incidental needs as it linked sponsors, primarily from the U.S., with youth in need on the island. Providing financial support continues to be an integral part of the development program; in September of 2006, however, the program’s vision was expanded to offer holistic care – spiritually, mentally, physically, and socially.
The program is still under development, but presently financial aid is given, spiritual mentoring and encouragement are offered, students’ academic progress is followed, and communication with sponsors is encouraged. “Chief,” one of our Ugandan leaders, holds weekly meetings with the youth (both sponsored and unsponsored), teaching them on a variety of topics surrounding life skills, wise decision making, and morality. We also offer social activities and events for the sponsored children, and attempt to foster a family atmosphere for all the children.
Currently, around 50 students, enrolled in primary and secondary schools or vocational schools, are being assisted financially by the child development program.
